The Ultimate Jewellery Gift Guide

How To choose the Perfect jewellery gift

There’s something undeniably luxurious about unwrapping a piece of jewellery. Not only does it feel like a real treat, but a well-chosen jewellery gift has the potential to be something worn daily and treasured for years to come.

BUT with so many options - necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, silver, gold agghhh- it can be a daunting task to get it right. Luckily I’m here to help with a simple guide on how to choose the perfect jewellery gift.

HIGH STREET VS. HANDMADE

Jewellery is a highly personal gift, even more so when made by a brand with which the recipient’s values align. Consider what is important to your loved one - are they looking for a high-street big brand name, or do they hold high value in independent brands focused on sustainability?

PLAN AHEAD

Buying jewellery is unlikely to be a next day delivery shopping experience.  Give yourself enough time to find exactly what you want, with some time built in for requesting something that may be out of stock or needs to be made to size.

DO SOME RESEARCH

It might sound obvious, but it’s important you pay attention to your recipient – what’s their jewellery style?

SILVER OR GOLD

Start here.  It’s very important.  Some people are flexible when it comes to mixing metals but most people are not.  Raid their jewellery box, look at what they wear or study some photos – the clues will be there.

remember that they know best

Try to let go of what YOU like.  Jewellery is a way to really express your personality and style - so trust that they know themselves best. Definitely don’t get caught up in what you think would suit them if it’s not aligned with what they usually wear.

SIZE MATTERS

If buying a ring or bangle you need to be confident you know what size they’ll need (or have a good read of the returns and exchanges policy).  For necklaces think about length - at Black Octopus Jewellery I always offer a choice of chain lengths to accommodate different body shapes and styles.

There’s value in playing it safe

If determining an exact ring size isn’t possible and you don’t want to ruin a surprise, then play it safer with some earrings or a pendant.  Have a look at some useful sizing guides to help you out, and never be shy to contact the maker and ask.

WHAT’s Their Jewellery style?

It really matters that you get this right.  If your loved one prefers big brand names or ultra delicate fine jewellery complete with diamonds, Black Octopus probably isn’t the place for you.  Think about how they wear their jewellery- is it a few everyday pieces worn consistently or do they switch it up all the time and like to make a statement?

What’s the Occasion?

The occasion is definitely relevant to the choice. A piece of jewellery that’s perfect for your partner on an anniversary will differ from a close friend’s unexpected birthday treat.

CHoose a timeless design

One of my favourite things about jewellery is that a classic design stands the test of time. Whether a versatile pendant necklace that works seamlessly from workwear to glam, or some classic stud earrings for someone who appreciates understated luxury, choosing a piece that will stick around as favourite jumpers come and go isn’t as hard as you think.

Consider the Budget

While jewellery is undoubtedly a luxury gift, it doesn’t have to empty your savings. The price of jewellery can vary widely based on the metal, gemstones, and craftsmanship involved. Fortunately, there are options at every price point.

Affordable Luxury

Consider Gold Vermeil as an more affordable alternative to solid gold, or Sterling Silver ahead of platinum or white gold.

Make the Investment

For a more significant milestone or anniversary, choosing a solid gold or platinum piece can serve not only as a beautiful gift for now, but as an heirloom to be passed down through generations.

Most of my pieces can be made to order in your required precious metal, contact me to find out more.

Presentation is Key

Finally, remember than opening a gift is an experience that begins at first glance. The right presentation adds an extra layer of excitement and luxury to the gift-giving experience.
